Playing duplicate bridge with one or two slow pairs in a session often frustrates the faster players and causes sessions to overrun but repeatedly asking the slower players to average unplayed boards may cause them to feel that they unwelcome or are being singled out for criticism.
A computer bridge timer
- can give a clear visual indication to all pairs that they are playing at an appropriate speed. Discreet audible tones can emphasise when tables should be starting their next board.
- can accurately estimate the time that the session will end, enabling a director to adjust to the number of boards, the average board times etc. from the outset.
- is less intimidating to slower players than having a director called
- means there is one less task for the director.
